Barangay is a Filipino word meaning small village or community. Ask any Filipino for more information.
Tropical decorated guesthouse is located in a typical Amsterdam canal house built in 1777 on the former coastline of Amsterdam. The house has still her original facade with a gable stone of an island with 3 palm trees. Barangay welcomed their first guests in August of 1999.
Barangay gives each guest a warm welcome, a uniquely decorated room and of course their world famous breakfasts!
The area
Location wise this is one of the best areas to explore Amsterdam and beyond.
Literally, most tourist attractions are just around the corner, within walking distance!
The area named "The Golden Reaal" is right in the old centre 200 meters south-west from the Central Station. Our quiet street Droogbak connects 2 major canals, the Singel and the Prinsengracht. Parallel with the Droogbak is the longest shopping street of the Netherlands. A section of this street is named Haarlemmerstraat/dijk, a former sea dike, but now you find good restaurants, specialty- and local shops, coffeeshops, cafe's, gallaries, hair saloons, laundromats, a famous art-deco cinema and a lot more. The Brouwersgracht one of the most beautiful canals connecting the four main canals is just one street behind it.
Barangay B&B is next to the famous Jordaan quarter where you can also find Anne Frank's house and markets on Saturday and Mondays.
The Central station for all kind of public transportation is a leisurely 3-4 minute walk. It will only take you 20 minutes from Schiphol Airport by train, or car.
The Hosts
Wimmo and God (as he is called by his friends) are two easy-going guys sharing their lives together since 1996. In August 1999 thier biggest dream came true and opened their own guesthouse, Barangay Bed and Breakfast.
Wimmo, the Dutch look-a-like of Bruce Willis was born in a small city near Rotterdam. He was trained as a classical ballet dancer in The Hague and from 1980 till 1987, he danced for Het Internationale Dans Theather in Amsterdam. After 3 years in the advertising world, he worked for a canal boat company and managed it for 10 years. Aside from the Barangay, Wimmo works part-time as host/guide on canal boats trips for the same company.
Before cold Netherlands 1996, God lived a long and happy live in tropical paradise, The Philippines. There he was a college instructor in economics and political science, a research writer both for MBC business magazine and Lady Senator Rasul. Happier times in Amsterdam, Godwin did all kind of 'odd jobs' instead of finishing his MBA studies. He also worked for a canal boat company, waited for Hard Rock Café, helped a very good friend run his guesthouse and seriously, was a data typist. Godwin is a fanatic tennis player and since 2005 a licensed tennis instructor. He plays in de GLTA European circuit.
The Other Hosts
Flip and Gogo. After just over a year of living together our family was finally complete when our twins were born on 30 july 1997. These 2 red/ginger cats are our name-sakes, our nicknames when were cute and harmles kids.
Gogo is 100% pure breed cat, he looks like one and behaves like one, he has his own world and would rather be left alone BUT late at night, Gogo never fails to join us on the coach to watch Oprah or TelSell.
Flip also looks like a cat but don't be fooled by the looks... his soul is that of a dog. He loves people and more importantly, he loves the attention and most of all, he loves food. Early morning he serves the breakfast in bed to the Patio Guests, BUT please please, don't feed him, he is on a special diet.
